Strain hardened molybdenum-bearing 316 stainless steel stud bolts with Class 2 diameter-graded mechanical requirements for corrosion-resistant high-pressure bolting.
ASTM A193/A193M Grade B8M Class 2 Stud Bolts are produced from UNS S31600 Type 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel and are strain hardened to achieve the diameter-graded elevated tensile and yield strength requirements of the Class 2 designation under ASTM A193. This is the most commonly specified strain hardened stainless stud bolt grade for corrosion-resistant pressure bolting, combining the significant pitting and crevice corrosion resistance improvement provided by 2–3% molybdenum over standard 304-type grades with the substantially higher mechanical strength achievable through cold working. Class 2 mechanical requirements are specified in diameter ranges, with maximum strength requirements applying to smaller diameter bolts and progressively reduced requirements for larger diameters, reflecting the practical limitations of cold work penetration in larger bar stock. Grade B8M Class 2 stud bolts are the grade of choice for high-pressure flanges in offshore platforms, subsea equipment, chemical processing plants, marine systems, and pharmaceutical facilities where the combination of corrosion resistance and elevated mechanical strength is mandated by both process conditions and applicable pressure equipment design codes.
