    ASTM A193/A193M Grade B16 Stud Bolts – UNS K14072

Chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel stud bolts for sustained elevated-temperature high-pressure service in steam turbines, boilers, and petrochemical reactors.

ASTM A193/A193M Grade B16 Stud Bolts are manufactured from UNS K14072, a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium (Cr-Mo-V) low alloy steel specifically formulated for superior creep strength and mechanical performance at sustained elevated temperatures, significantly exceeding the high-temperature capability of the standard Grade B7 chromium-molybdenum steel. The vanadium addition to the chromium-molybdenum base provides additional precipitation hardening and grain boundary strengthening effects that resist creep and stress rupture at temperatures up to approximately 540°C (1000°F), making Grade B16 the preferred alloy steel stud bolt for steam turbine casings, high-temperature boiler flanges, hot hydrogen service in refinery reactors, and petrochemical process equipment that operates continuously at elevated temperatures where Grade B7 would suffer excessive creep relaxation and loss of clamping force over time. These stud bolts are quenched and tempered to meet ASTM A193 specified mechanical property requirements and are routinely specified in power generation, petroleum refining, and chemical processing wherever ASME design codes require alloy steel bolting with certified high-temperature stress allowables superior to those of standard B7.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASTM A193 Grade B16?
    ASTM A193 Grade B16 is a bolting material covering 1Cr-1Mo-1/4V creep-resistant alloy (UNS K14072). Used in high-temperature, high-pressure flange, pressure-vessel and heat-exchanger bolting service per ASTM A193/A193M.
What is the UNS designation for ASTM A193 Grade B16?
The UNS designation for ASTM A193 Grade B16 is UNS K14072. This corresponds to 1Cr-1Mo-1/4V creep-resistant alloy. The UNS code is universal across ASTM, ASME (SA-193), PED 2014/68/EU and NORSOK material specifications.
What is the upper service temperature for ASTM A193 B16?
B16 (1Cr-1Mo-1/4V creep-resistant) is rated for sustained service up to 593 °C (1100 °F) — higher than B7 — making it the standard alloy stud for steam-turbine flanges, superheater bolting and high-pressure steam piping per ASME B&PV Section II-D.
